Public - 5:14 PM

As there is still a chance that this blog will fall on Seattle ears, let me take this time to gently criticize my AL team and that for which it stands.

***Realize, that it is things like this which relegate our beloved Seattle Mariners to second chair in the Jimmy Symphony Orchestra (behind our beloved San Francisco Giants.)***

1) The DH. I have been of the school of thought "nine men field, nine men bat". The argument that the DH provides for more hitting may be true, but only minutely so. I forget the exact numbers, and the book which could clarify this for us is sitting smartly in my bookcase in Oakland, CA. But the total benefit of the DH turned out to be like 10 or 20 additional hits per 1000 at-bats. so maybe only like 5, 10 extra hits for an every day player. which means an extra hit every few weeks? Shit, now it seems like i totally fucked up the math on that one. This from the same guy who almost lost Underground Construction $500,000.

Anycrap, the thing about the M's and the DH... An exhibition game coming up between the M's and the San Diego Padres will be a night game at new Petco Park (stupid stupid people). The M's have asked the padres if they could play by AL rules and use a DH because Edgar Martinez hasn't had too many ABs during the spring and definitely no night ABs.

First off, you wouldn't have had this problem had Edgar been a regular fielder. Second, stupid stupid San Diego, they said yes!!! If *I* was approached by an AL team and asked "Can we use our DH in your game in an NL park because oww, our v@gin@s hurt?" I would've pointed them in the direction of Anaheim and told them to rent the place out.

The correct response, for those of you keeping track, is "No. Let Edgar play first base, *then* he can bat."

2) That stupid Seattle fan I saw at the sportsbook at the Venetian. (OK gotta hurry up since it's past 5 now) dumb choadstain. He was drunk and tryign to talk up the M's. "They're gonna dominate the AL West. You ever heard of Ichiro?" (this was said with a tone of derision as he was speaking to somebody else who probably wasn't familiar with the AL West. fortunately, I am) Yeah, Ichiro batted all of .312 last year? and his BA has steadily gone down as his division rivals have slowly figured him out. Is it any wonder that you didn't hear a single thing about ichiro last year? No, it's not because I was surrounded by giants/a's media outlets, but because he's old hat.

"The M's picked up Rich Aurilia, and he's from the Giants." And then he mumbled something favorable about Brian Sabean. I don't remember, because i was drinking in the sportsbook and had just won $30 on a horse who was racing just north of Berkeley, CA named Ms. INXS. Yeah dude, I agree that Sabean is a bad-ass, but why then would you want to trade against him? Aurilia was good but will never have the career year he had a few seasons ago. If Sabes wanted to trade him away, there was probably better reason than payroll trimming.

Yes. This is what bothers me about the Mariners right now. I'm sure that between now and when i swear off baseball numerous other things will come up. And I'll let you know.

I'm still a faithful bandwagon M's fan, don't worry. And i won't be a fairweather fan, rest assured. I have my jersey and wonderful memories of a year of living in the Pacific Northwest. (hopefully more, if i stop goofing off and work on this bid. tomorrow)

go giants/m's,
James
